HD, IP and analog CCTV cameras explained

The terminology around camera systems is confusing, and it is often used to sell people more than they need. This explains the main types in plain terms.

Analog

The older technology, still fitted in a lot of Dubai properties. Analog cameras send a video signal down coaxial cable to a recorder. They work, and older systems are often still running, but the picture resolution is low by current standards. You can usually see that something happened. You often cannot see who did it.

If you have an analog system, the useful thing to know is that the cabling can frequently be reused when upgrading, which makes moving to HD far cheaper than a full reinstall.

HD over coaxial

This is the middle ground and often the sensible answer. HD cameras that run over the same type of coaxial cabling as analog, giving a much better picture without new cable. For anyone upgrading an existing system, this is usually the cost-effective route.

Picture quality is good enough to identify people, which is the practical threshold that matters.

IP cameras

IP cameras connect over network cabling and behave like devices on a network. They generally offer the highest resolution, more flexibility in how systems are built, and features such as more sophisticated motion detection. They suit new installations, larger sites, and anywhere you want the highest picture quality or want to expand significantly later.

The trade-off is cost and that they need network cabling, so retrofitting into a property wired for analog means new cable runs.

Resolution: how much do you need?

Resolution beyond a certain point delivers less than people expect. 4K produces a lot of detail, but it also produces much larger files, which means more storage or less retention for the same drive. On a small property, good HD cameras in the right positions will outperform 4K cameras in poor positions every time.

Where 4K earns its cost is covering a wide area with one camera, such as a large warehouse floor or a long driveway, where you may want to zoom into the recorded footage afterwards.

What matters more than resolution

Night performance. Almost everything people install cameras for happens after dark, and the gap between cameras is far wider at night than in daylight. Two cameras with identical daytime specifications can be worlds apart at 2am.

Placement. A well-placed 1080p camera beats a badly-placed 4K one.

Build quality on outdoor cameras. Heat, dust and humidity here will find any weakness, and outdoor cameras that are not properly rated fail early.

What we recommend

For most homes, good HD cameras in well-chosen positions, with strong night performance outdoors. For large commercial sites and anywhere needing wide coverage from a single camera, IP with higher resolution. For anyone with an existing analog system, HD over the existing cabling is usually the best value move.

We recommend the system type based on the property, existing cabling and required coverage rather than defaulting to the most expensive option.
